This past spring, I joined friend Sue for a mosaic class in Ravenna, Italy, which is home to some of the most magnificent mosaics in existence, I reckon.
Altogether a very appropriate place to learn to make our own versions. Sue had discovered Kokomosaico, the mosaic studio and school of Arianna Gallo and Luca Barberini and their family and friends. We spent two days learning the direct method on cement, playing with color and pattern, smashing up beautiful bits of marble and glass, and visiting an exhibition of Luca’s work, which has a lot of say about climate change and its effects on the oceans and the planet. I loved the work in this show; I took the detail photos below there.
Meanwhile, borrowing Luca’s studio, Sue and I carried on with our projects.
I know I took a photo of Sue’s finished work but cannot find it! Perhaps she can upload it in the comments section. UPDATE! HERE IT IS!
In a few weeks, friend Bernie and I are going to join a local mosaic workshop. Stay tuned for details!
These are exquisite- love love love
